Halloween Movies: My Top 20
My 20 favorite Halloween movies (no, NIGHT OF THE DEMONS and HOCUS POCUS aren’t on it)
WNUF HALLOWEEN SPECIAL
An 83 minute, Baltimore-lensed 2013 video project made to play like a VHS recording of a fictitious 1987 Halloween TV special
BAD BIOLOGY
A supremely immature “Godawful Love Story” from Frank Henenlotter
BRAIN DEAD
Fact: Roger Corman did manage to turn out some interesting films in the 1990s, with the superbly trippy BRAIN DEAD near the top of the list
THE MUNSTERS
The latest in a long line of unasked-for Hollywood reboots is Rob Zombie’s 2022 take on the classic TV sitcom THE MUNSTERS
THE DICE MAN
This novel, about a man who makes decisions according to a roll of the dice, is said to have inspired many people around the world to live in just that manner
PHILLY
A “modern tale of the macabre” that worked better in its movie adaptation: the 1981 teen comedy PRIVATE LESSONS
THE BED SITTING ROOM
In which the UK’s new wave science fiction scene came (briefly) to Hollywood, courtesy of director Richard Lester
SOMETHING WILD
In tallying the output of the late Jonathan Demme, I find that the criminally underrated SOMETHING WILD ranks near the top
THE DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISIE
A surrealist prank of a movie from the incomparable Luis Buñuel
