- Remembering Those Who’ve Passed On
Here it is, the latest edition of A Look Back in Bedlam. Highlighted are notable Bedlam Files worthy happenings in the worlds of film and literature, capped by brief takes on my favorite 2025 discoveries from years past and an exhaustive listing of important figures who passed in ‘25. (NIGHT GALLERY cast members, it seems, exited at an unusually high rate.)
My take on 2025 overall? Frankly, it was probably the sorriest year I’ve experienced since I began doing these “Look Backs” 17 years ago, although there were some bright spots.
The End?
Doomsday predictions have run riot on the internet since its earliest days and they certainly didn’t slow down in 2025. I’ve lost track of all the rapture countdowns and breakdown-of-civilization forecasts (the year 2024, as you may recall, was widely prophesized to be The End), but in 2025 those things took a backseat to the new Harbinger of Doom: A.I.
Everybody is scared of A.I., which is apparently on track to destroy the entertainment industry and human civilization on the whole. Depending on who you ask, this apocalypse is set to occur in five or three years (while according to some predictions the takeover of humanity should have already occurred). I’m finding myself flashing back to the 1980s, when computers were widely predicted to wipe out the human race by the end of the millennium…yet the millennium is now over and somehow we’re still here.
It’s a fact that all the anti-A.I. hysteria has proven quite beneficial to the media gatekeepers, who’ve used it as a convenient distraction. A.I. has in fact already been employed in algorithm-based filmmaking, predictive box office software and, it’s been rumored, screenplays (with the generic dialogue and cliched narratives of modern cinema evidencing a definite A.I. tinge).
In summation, I have no idea what’s going to happen with A.I. I do, however, believe Hollywood would be better off fixing its current problems, A.I.-related and otherwise, before fretting about a robot apocalypse.
The State of Hollywood: The Long View
Don’t believe all the fake reports about Hollywood being “stronger than ever.” Right now, in fact, is very likely the end for Hollywood and theatrical exhibition on the whole, with 2025 having contained more mega-bombs than any other year in recent memory. And no, AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH isn’t going to single-handedly turn things around: 1) It’s not quite the overwhelming success many are making it out to be, and 2) One success won’t negate all the year’s costly flops.
The reasons for this sorry state? I’ll take the long view, as Hollywood’s current issues were quite accurately forecast back in 1991, in the infamous Katzenberg Memo. Written by ex-Disney head Jeffrey Katzenberg, said memo (intended as a rallying cry for Disney employees) offered up highly prescient proclamations like “It seems that, like lemmings, we are all racing faster and faster into the sea, each of us trying to outrun and outspend and out-earn the other in a mad sprint toward the mirage of making the next blockbuster” and “If we should ever become bureaucratic, we will then make the kinds of movies that bureaucracies make—boring ones” (modern day Hollywood, I should add, is very bureaucratic).
Furthermore, “when times get tough I have no doubt that people will still want to escape to the movies, but they’ll want it for the historic cost of a loaf of bread.” That, obviously, is a bit of wisdom Hollywood has completely ignored.
Going back even farther, there was the 1980 essay “Why Are Movies So Bad? Or, The Numbers” by Pauline Kael, who likewise provided a dire, and quite prescient, warning about where the business was heading. “If for the last couple of years Hollywood couldn’t seem to do anything right,” Kael proclaimed, “it isn’t that it was just a stretch of bad luck—it’s the result of recent developments within the industry. And in all probability it will get worse, not better.” The major problem: “The studios no longer make movies primarily to attract and please moviegoers; they make movies in such a way as to get as much as possible from the prearranged and anticipated deals.”
That, I’m afraid, essentially sums it up.
The Quentin Issue
Quentin Tarantino, it seems, is on the fast track to becoming the gen-x George R.R. Martin. Consider: it’s been seven years since Tarantino’s last directorial outing, and all he’s really done in the ensuing stretch is run his mouth, causing great upset in ‘25 with his takes on actor Paul Dano and others. That’s not an especially terrible thing, mind you; Tarantino is always an entertaining presence, regardless of whether you agree with his blather or not, and if he wants to spend the remainder of his career shooting the shit he’s certainly earned the right to do so.
The problem is that, given the current sorry state of the industry, Tarantino’s brand of auteur-driven commercialism is needed now more than ever. In 2025 the closest approximations of that brand were ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER by Paul Thomas Anderson and AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH by James Cameron; the fact that both films were so ridiculously overrated proves there’s a real hunger for visionary crowd pleasers, i.e. precisely the type of film Tarantino makes—and the longer he waits to do so, the chances that there will still be an industry capable of supporting his ambitions steadily decrease.
The Sydney Issue
To think: I was sure the Sydney Sweeney craze would die down in 2025. The media, I was certain, couldn’t possibly remain obsessed with a marginally pretty 5’3” actress with zero notable roles…yet that obsession has persisted, and to an even greater degree than before.
Not even the introduction of the much remarked-upon A.I. generated actress Tilly Norwood was able to dislodge Sydney’s hold on the public consciousness. Surely you recall the hubbub over those silly jeans ads she headlined over the summer (a hubbub that continues to simmer), or all the ire about the many unsuccessful movies she graced in 2025.
Until a few weeks ago it seemed as if those flops may have weakened Sweeney’s Hollywood standing, but then her latest film THE HOUSEMAID was released last month to enormous success, and equilibrium was restored. To quote myself: “Sydney Sweeney is undoubtedly going to be with us for a very, very long time.”
The Literary Scene
Regarding the books of 2025, I have a good news, bad news take. On the good side, there were a great deal of mainstream publications that interested me; an unusual situation, to be sure (having zero interest in romantasy and “cozy” horror, there’s generally not much for me in today’s literary scene), but an encouraging one. The problem? That many of 2025’s most interesting publications, including KING SORROW by Joe Hill, THE SHARDS by Brett Easton Ellis and TOM’S CROSSING by Mark Z. Danielewski, clocked in at over 500 pages (1,200 in the case of TOM’S CROSSING), and who has time to read all that? Certainly not me.
Showbiz Memoirs
The other major points of interest in the publishing world were showbiz memoirs, which in 2025 reached some kind of plateau. It didn’t seem to matter if the authors were still alive, as evidenced by INSOMNIA from the Band’s late Robbie Robertson (1943-2023), who dished about his friendship with Martin Scorsese, and THE BIGGER PICTURE by Jon Landau (1960-2024), who wrote about his very charmed Hollywood existence, which included producing TITANIC and the AVATAR films.
Notable first person recountings by people who are still alive included THE UNCOOL by Cameron Crowe, who provided a long-in-coming remembrance of his tenure as a ROLLING STONE correspondent in the 1970s; SCENE by Abel Ferrara, a blunt accounting of the author’s rocky directorial career and near-fatal heroin addiction; and FUTURE BOY by Michael J. Fox, who dishes about the making of BACK TO THE FUTURE.
Promising 2025 memoirs I didn’t get to included OZZY & ME from Stephen Rea (who details his friendship with the recently deceased Ozzy Osbourne), VAGABOND by Tim Curry, WE DID OK, KID by Anthony Hopkins, THE BOOK OF SHEEN by Charlie Sheen and REFLECTIONS: ON CINEMATOGRAPHY by Roger Deakins. I doubt I’ll get around to reading any of them before writing my forthcoming BEDLAM IN PRINT overview, but those books are of interest.
Blu-Rays: The Comeback?
Another positive development in a very bleak year was the resurgence of the supposedly moribund Blu-Ray format. Indeed, there were so many worthwhile Blu-Ray releases in 2025 I found myself flashing back to the early 2010s, when the format was at its height.
Thanks to outfits like Criterion, Kino Lorber, Vinegar Syndrome and Radiance, we got newly minted digitizations of classics like NIGHT OF THE JUGGLER, MAD FOXES, THE WOMAN CHASER, RAMPAGE, SORCERER, PERFORMANCE, THE CAT, MALPERTUIS, THE KILLER, HARD BOILED, A BULLET IN THE HEAD, THE BIG HEAT, PEKING OPERA BLUES, THEMROC…and the list goes on.
Favorite Discoveries, Literary and Cinematic
AND IT WILL ECHO [I EKHOM OTZOVYOTSYA]
Soviet made sci-fi that blends live action and animation in a never-completed, but quite provocative and intriguing, mini-feature
AND IT WILL ECHO (1987)
THE BOY WHO KICKED PIGS
A blast of highly British-centric funny-horrific nastiness from author Tom Baker. This book’s publication date, it so happens, was the year of the Columbine massacre, which it unwittingly forecasts.
COUNTDOWN CANADA
Called “Canada’s own WAR OF THE WORLDS,” this 1970 mock-doc convincingly envisions the once-unthinkable possibility of Canada being annexed by the US.
COUNTDOWN CANADA (1970) Full Film
THE HOUSE THAT GROANED
A graphic novel whose weirdness quotient is confirmed by a back cover blurb from Nicolas Roeg, and a narrative that leans quite heavily into the perverse and psychosexual.
SALT, SALIVA, SPERM AND SWEAT
The title tells the “story” of this very odd, and very gross, 47 minute mini-feature from Australia’s Philip Brophy (BODY MELT).
THE TOUCH
A most interesting mix of mystery and supernatural apprehension from post-Glasnost Russia, whose sociological upheavals are fully reflected in this deeply odd and unsettled 1992 film.
THE TRIAL [PROCES]
A Polish TV adaptation of Kafka’s THE TRIAL, scripted by Bruno Schultz and co-directed by Agnieszka Holland. No, it won’t ever displace Orson Wells’ TRIAL, but with such a pedigree how could this pic not be worthwhile?
