Welcome to the 2024 edition of my Look Back in Bedlam overview, in which I give my takes on some issues pertinent to this site, and do my best to offer a comprehensive listing of all the relevant deaths that occurred in the last year (participants in the 1972 film END OF THE ROAD didn’t fare too well in ‘24). Spoiler alert: the news, excepting a few glimmers of hope (which I’ll get to), wasn’t good.
The “AI-ephant” in the Room
Roughly a decade ago a friend of mine, who spent twenty years writing for a once-popular So Cal newspaper, decided to go back to school and learn a new trade. A wise move, it transpires, as my friend is now installed in a lucrative field while the newspaper in question is no more.
This admittedly not-very-scintillating anecdote serves as a prelude to perhaps the single most pressing issue facing the creative community: the rise of AI. A format that’s still in its infancy, it’s already wreaked a fair amount of havoc in ways both bad and otherwise (fact: AI was responsible for one of the most memorable films I saw last year, the YouTube short TERROR ABOVE THE SUNSET STRIP), and will almost certainly cause more damage in the coming years.
Hollywood mega-mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg, whose knowledge of the movie scene far outpaces mine, predicted that over 90 percent of animation industry jobs will be lost to AI. This means that those of you currently working in that and related fields (i.e. filmmaking on the whole) would do well to emulate my journalist friend and take some kind of action, because sitting around handwringing about the “AI Apocalypse” clearly isn’t helping matters.
Dismal Disney
For a website devoted primarily to horror and cult media, a focus on Disney’s fortunes may seem uncool or even counterproductive. The unavoidable fact, however, is that Disney is Hollywood’s major trendsetter, having accounted for a reported forty percent of the box office takings of 2019 (the year before everything went to hell) and introducing many of the bad decisions—the insertion of divisive political content, the overreliance on sequels and reboots and the backing of an unpopular streaming service—that have brought the industry to its current sorry state.
Perhaps the most telling, and prophetic, of Disney’s 2024 failures was Marvel’s long-in-the-works BLADE reboot. By long-in-the-works I mean five years, as the project commenced back in 2019 and appears to have been cancelled in ‘24 (no official announcements have been made, but the film has disappeared from Disney’s upcoming release listings). What occurred during those five years? From what I understand there was a lot of creative dithering as scripts were written and rewritten, directors came and went and actors were announced and then discarded.
A similar fate appears to have befallen Lucasfilm’s STAR WARS sequel REY, which has likewise been in the works for some time yet can’t seem to make it past the script stage. Then there are those Disney films, such as SNOW WHITE and CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD, that made it to production but were subjected to years’ worth of reshoots and constantly shifting release dates (both films, for the record, are currently scheduled to be unveiled in early 2025). The last Disney product to undergo such a hellish post-production was THE MARVELS, and we all know what happened with that film.
Most Vital Cinematic Development
That would be the ascendancy of a format at which I’ve traditionally turned up my nose: fan films, which broke out in a major way in 2024. Perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising that the MAD MAX pastiche HOPE AND GLORY handily beat out the officially sanctioned FURIOSA, as HOPE AND GLORY, unlike FURIOSA, actually featured Max (which I’d say is a vital element in a MAD MAX movie) and didn’t last a numbing 2½ hours. Nor, given the quality of recent STAR TREK media, should we be too nonplussed that the fan made UNIFICATION, featuring flawlessly rendered CGI representations of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, proved to be the most memorable STAR TREK movie in quite some time.
My takeaway? That Hollywood really needs to do better, because talented amateurs are waiting in the wings.
Least Vital Cinematic Development
Sequels were the bane of Hollywood’s 2024 existence. So prevalent were they that virtually every type was represented: soulless cash-ins (VENOM: THE LAST DANCE, MOANA 2), ambitious gambles (DUNE: PART TWO, KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES), decades-after-the-fact legacy follow-ups (TWISTERS, BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE), at least one batshit-crazy indulgence (JOKER: FOLIE A DEUX) and several prequels (THE FIRST OMEN, BEVERLY HILLS COP: AXEL F, etc.). Such an overreliance on what Roger Ebert once defined as “filmed deals” portends a great many things, none of them good—and to further the bad news, 2025 is already being called “the year of the sequel,” proving that bad habits die hard.
The Auteur Angle
At the opposite end of the sequel-obsessed Hollywood spectrum were the self-financed personal visions of Kevin Costner, with HORIZON: AN AMERICAN SAGA, and Francis Ford Coppola, with MEGALOPOLIS. I commend them both, but also acknowledge that those films’ financial failures were not entirely unjustified.
For defiantly uncommercial passion projects like these to succeed the results must be exceptional, as was the case with Coppola’s APOCALYPSE NOW and Costner’s DANCES WITH WOLVES. Whatever you might think of MEGALOPOLIS and HORIZON (I, for the record, kinda liked the former but didn’t care at all for the latter), the “exceptional” designation applies to neither. This means that Coppola and Costner, for all their go-it-alone bluster, had the same core problem afflicting mainstream Hollywood: their films simply weren’t good enough.
YouTube Snafus
In a potent demonstration of the adage “That Which Giveth Can Also Taketh Away,” YouTube has dispensed with several interesting films it had previously hosted. YouTube has long been one of the most vital sources for obscure media from past years, which in 2024 included the heretofore impossible-to-find CAN’T STOP THE MUSIC TV promo MAGIC NIGHT from 1980 (complete with vintage commercials!).
Other must-see obscurities found on YouTube included the Miguel Bejo cult items LA FAMILIA UNIDA ESPERANDO LA LLEGADA DE HALLEWYN (1971) and BETO NERVIO CONTRA EL PODER DE LAS TENIEBLAS (1979), Annette Kasch’s rampaging penis monster classic THE SECRET LIFE OF SARAH SHELDON (2006) and Paul Bartel’s bizarre comedy SHELF LIFE (1993), which for reasons I wasn’t privy to were all dropped in ‘24. The problem was that in at least three of those cases YouTube was the only viewing source, so hopefully interested parties were able to view these films before they went away.
Favorite Publisher
My favorite “publisher” of 2024 wasn’t actually a publisher, but an individual: Joe E. Bandel, who personally translated and distributed several worthwhile German language texts—the epic fantasy GHOSTS IN THE SWAMP, the biography HANNS HEINZ EWERS: THE STORY OF HIS DEVELOPMENT, the horror novella THE WITCH OF SANLÚCAR, etc.—from the 1920s. I tend to be weary of self-published translations, but Bandel did a good job with material that in my view is simply too fascinating to be ignored, and anyway, a certain cliché about beggars not being choosers comes to mind.
Favorite Discoveries, Literary and Cinematic
THE EMBALMER
A cunning and perverse Italian made thriller that takes the guise of, and works best as, a dark character study, with a true performance for the ages by Ernesto Mahieux.
FAMINE ‘33
A powerfully stark and unforgiving dramatization of the Holodomar, or Artificial Famine, that afflicted Ukraine in 1932-33. Pleasant this film may not be, but necessary it definitely is.
LYCHEE LIGHT CLUB
A manga one-shot, involving perversion and psychosis amid a group of middle schoolers, that was, unbelievably enough, oriented toward young adults.
MIDORI-KO
The magnum opus of Japanese animator Keita Kurosaka, a 55-minute phantasmagoria offering further proof that any film with a heroine named Midori is well worth the attention of weird movie buffs the world over.
MONSIEUR ROBERT HOUDIN
A French TV biopic about the illusionist Robert Houdin, whose magic tricks are presented, intriguingly, as actual occurrences rather than the carefully wrought illusions they were.
NIGHT OF DELUSIONS
I’m amazed it took me this long to learn about this Phil Dickian mind-bender by Keith Laumer, a first class exercise in reality warpage in a dystopian setting.
TRANSFORMATION
Edmund Plante isn’t my favorite writer, but this body horror blowout, about a young woman undergoing all manner of gruesome transformations after encountering an alien something, is quite something else.
VIDEOSYNCRATIC
In which a British home video impresario writes, engagingly, about his experiences working at various Blockbuster Video UK outlets and running his own video store, in a book designed to resemble a VHS tape.
