END OF THE LINE

Another movie everyone seems to like but me. Sorry, but I found this subway-set splatter fest to be dull and uninspired

SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE

This isn’t a revenge movie per se, but a dark, brutal exploration of fate and consequence from one of the world’s most interesting filmmakers.  That filmmaker is Korea’s Chanwook Park, who’s created a deeply odd, and deeply personal, cinematic universe unique unto itself

SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD

The final installment of George Romero’s DEAD saga is about on par with his previous efforts LAND OF THE DEAD and DIARY OF THE DEAD: flawed in many respects, but pretty good for the most part

STREET TRASH

Another eighties-era gorefest that adds up to very little conceptually but excels in manic inspiration. It’s about bums who get a hold of flesh-melting hooch—plenty of grue ensues!

SPLIT SECOND

An above average Rutger Hauer vehicle from 1992 that mixes future shock—make that schlock—and splatter

SOUTHERN COMFORT

This horrific bayou-set kill fest is a key action-suspense film of the 1980s, and one of the finest-ever outings by director Walter Hill

SILENT HILL

Contrary to what I once believed, it IS possible to have too much surreal weirdness in a movie. This expensive adaptation of the PC game SILENT HILL, from the talented Christophe Gans, proves that point adequately

SHADOWS OF THE MIND

A little-seen slasher directed by LAST HOUSE ON DEAD END STREET’S late Roger Watkins. Quite simply: it’s NOT a good movie

THE SEVERED ARM

A zero budgeted early seventies gore fest that’s unremarkable in most respects (and downright inept in others) but has a curious resonance nonetheless

SCANNERS

This David Cronenberg freak-out about warring telepaths contains one of the stand-out moments in horror cinema. As for the rest of the movie, it’s pretty good
