Reviews & Commentary by Adam Groves
SHOCK
A superb 1977 horror movie, the last to be directed by the late, great Mario Bava. A textbook example of how to build mood, tension and, yes, shock on a limited budget, it remains one of the best films of its kind
SHIVERS
The first feature by David Cronenberg, 1975’s SHIVERS pretty much set the stage for what was to come from “Dave Deprave.”
SHE FREAK
There exists one genre classic I’m betting WON’T be remade any time soon: Todd Browning’s notorious 1932 shocker FREAKS. Yet there was an attempt at doing just that back in 1967: SHE FREAK, a perfectly awful film
SHALLOW GRAVE
The timeworn concept of normal folks finding a suitcase full of money is given a wicked dose of mid-nineties cynicism in this memorably twisted British import, the directorial debut of Danny Boyle
SHAKE, RATTLE & ROLL
Here it is, the 1984 three-parter that launched the phenomenally popular—in its native Philippines, at least—SHAKE, RATTLE & ROLL film series
A WEB OF BLACK WIDOWS
This brisk 97-page collection, the seventh of PS Publishing’s “Showcase” series, contains six stories. All are extremely well written and imagined, and linked by a number of elements
THE WAVE
I have wo things to say about this slim novel: 1). It’s not very good, and 2). It’s one of the most chilling and unforgettable books I’ve read in some time
THE WASP FACTORY
This is, quite simply put, the finest horror novel of the 1980s, and one of the most accomplished first novels I’ve ever read
THE WAKING THAT KILLS
A highly atmospheric and well written horror novel that left me cold
WAITING FOR OCTOBER
The genre-busting follow-up to Dark Arts Books’ 2006 horror-themed anthology CANDY IN THE DUMPSTER
