The latest installment of my annual Look Back in Bedlam overview arrives after an especially impacting year for entertainment media. I’ve already covered much of it in my monthly email updates, so here are the portions I haven’t yet covered, including…
The Year’s Most Annoying Movie-Related Development
(Back to the top)
Back in 2016, when FULL FRONTAL WITH SAMANTHA BEE was premiering on TBS, we were shown billboards proclaiming “Watch Or You’re Sexist.” That slogan was meant in jest, of course, the implication being that FULL FRONTAL, a rare female fronted late night talk show (although not, as was erroneously claimed, the “first”), was strong enough to attract viewers without having to resort to such lazy and confrontational promotion.
Fast-forward six years, when Hollywood didn’t merely embrace the “Watch Or You’re Racist/Sexist/Homophobic” approach, but incorporated it into its advertising campaigns, with “Toxic Fandom” becoming a common refrain among Hollywood’s media shills. Fair enough, but I’d advise keeping in mind that movie promotion is a lot like life, in that you get out of it what you put into it.
BTW, Paramount has gone against the anti-fan tide in selling its product, providing brief video clips of actors introducing movies to theatrical audiences, and thanking them for showing up. In TOP GUN: MAVERICK, in which Tom Cruise provided the intro, the gambit appears to have paid off, but in BABYLON, in which Margot Robbie and Diego Calva did the honors, it evidently didn’t work.

I don’t care. Next topic…
Marvel and DC, circa 2022
In last year’s Look Back I wrote of how it seemed as if the movie arms of these two brands were poised to suck up whatever money remains in the known universe. Now, it seems, Marvel and DC have been rather severely weakened.
The reasons are myriad: shoddy special effects, lax quality control, a lack of overall vision and, yes, politics. This has made for a lot of strife in what previously seemed a conflict-free subgenre—note the outrage that has surrounded James Gunn’s takeover of DC—and movies that have failed to recapture the widespread appeal that pre-2020s Marvel and DC fare had. I don’t know anyone who liked Marvel’s THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER, nor DC’s BLACK ADAM—although DC’s other major ‘22 release THE BATMAN was okay, so I guess that means they’re currently in the lead.
Also…
Speaking of Marvel and DC, let’s talk about their comic book divisions. It was comic books, let’s not forget, that birthed all the iconic movie characters, and according to the mainstream media things have been going swimmingly in that arena. Yet recent reports from the people who actually create the content for that industry tell a different story. It seems non-payment has become a big issue, with the worst offenders being midlevel outfits like Valiant and Aftershock.
No surprise there (indie publishing is a legendarily unstable industry, as I can personally attest), but the issues, according to the reports, are now affecting the industry’s higher echelons—as artist Will Robson claimed, “I’ve struggled ALL year with ALL the large companies I work for to get paid on the agreed time.” The fact that he doesn’t name names renders Robson’s admonition a mite suspect, although the words “ALL the large companies” are pretty all-encompassing, and, given that Robson does indeed work for “ALL the large companies” (Marvel and DC included), quite damning.
A Most Unexpected Disturbance of the Universe
(Back to the top)
Prior to the advent of 2022 I had no idea who Doomcock, Nerdrotic or The Critical Drinker were, and I strongly doubt Hollywood at large did, either. Yet we all know now, with these three troublemakers and several others (including, unexpectedly enough, FILM THREAT’S Chris Gore) using YouTube to terrorize Tinseltown in the way Harry Knowles once did: by sharing (alleged) insider gossip, test screening results and unpopular opinions. Say what you like about the political attitudes these guys espouse, but I say anyone who shakes up Hollywood like they have deserves some credit.
Doomcock—or at least a very obvious stand-in—was immortalized as the main bad guy in SHE-HULK, and appears to have helped persuade Disney to reshoot the heavily contentious ending of the upcoming INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY. Based on what I’ve heard about this ending (I won’t give it away but info on it is easy to find) that’s a heroic act Dr. Jones himself would be hard-pressed to top.
The Scary Stuff
It’s been said that Hollywood’s output represents the subconscious of its audiences. This means the horrific fare excreted by H’wood in 2022, and the outsized success it enjoyed, says a lot about our collective state of mind.
A few years ago, the big horror movie hit was A QUIET PLACE, whose success was put down by many to widespread fears of cancel culture. In 2022 the scary movie smash was SMILE, about an insanity plague that results in reality distortion and creepy smiles amid its users. What real life events might be making those things resonate with audiences? Take your pick…
Favorite Publisher
Spurl Editions isn’t new, and nor is it prolific, but it is a vital publisher. Having provided affordable trade paperback reprintings of several must-read publications from years past, such as THE BIG LOVE, THE STRANGE WORLD OF WILLIE SEABROOK and ONE, NO-ONE AND ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND, Spurl can be viewed as the modern-day answer to fringe outfits from past eras like Amok Press and Creation Books, with packaging and cover art that’s unique and distinct. I don’t know how much longer Spurl Editions will last (fringe publishing is a dicey proposition even in the best of times), but I sincerely hope they stay afloat forever.
Favorite DVD/Blu-Ray Purveyor
Yes, I know DVDs and Blu-rays are supposed to be “obsolete,” but I still like ‘em. Plus, they’re still being put out, with 2022’s premiere home video manufacturer and distributor being the one and only Criterion Collection. I don’t mean to take anything away from Kino Lorber or Arrow, but Criterion was and remains the top of the heap in this particular arena.
Its ‘22 output included extras-packed releases of Thomas Vinterberg’s Dogma 95 masterpiece THE CELEBRATION and Ronald Bronstein’s Mumblecore classic FROWNLAND, as well as Michael Haneke’s “Emotional Glaciation” trilogy, Mai Zetterling’s never-before-released-on-home-video-in-the-US NIGHT GAMES (as part of a three-disc set), Věra Chytilová’s anarchic Czech outrage DAISIES and several others. And they’re not done, with upcoming releases that include special editions of Lars Von Trier’s EUROPE TRILOGY, David Lynch’s INLAND EMPIRE and John Woo’s LAST HURRAH FOR CHIVALRY, all of which promise to be must-owns.
Favorite Discoveries, Literary and Cinematic:
ACT OF VIOLENCE IN A YOUNG JOURNALIST
The subject of the popular 2021 doco STRAIGHT TO VHS was this little-seen (in the US) 1988 relic from the Uruguayan video underground, a truly astounding piece of crapola that deserves to be designated a Bad Movie Classic.
ALEISTER CROWLEY: WANDERING THE WASTE
The life of Aleister Crowley is related in the form of a 108-page graphic novel that functions as both a refutation of the sensationalistic claims that have surrounded Crowley and a confirmation of his magical abilities (or at least his belief in them). Impressive.
THE BURNING BUDDHA MAN
Cut-out animation, H.R. Giger-esque grotesquerie and Buddhism—an irresistible combination, I say, in a 2013 film that qualifies as a work of undeniable psychotic genius. Its writer-director went on to make VIOLENCE VOYAGER, but in my view this earlier film is better.
FANTASIA OF COLOR IN EARLY CINEMA
A coffee table hardcover from 2015 that presents a wholly unique and eye-popping look at the silent movie era with a most unexpected emphasis: color, as depicted in museum-worthy full-page stills.
MAGIC MIRROR
A 2010 collection of 1980s and 90s era comic strips by England’s Ed Pinsent, who combines several underground comix tropes (including a deceptively childlike aesthetic and an overall concentration on death and destruction) with an intelligence that belies the expected cheap shocks and gross-out excess.
MANY DEAD THINGS: THE SPECIMENS OF LORD MERRYLIN
A most unique melding or art and fiction that involves a long-dead collector of rare animal specimens. His findings are presented in the form of three-dimensional sculptures created by the British artist Alex CF, who also wrote, designed and published this 2011 book (and really needs to bring it back into print!).
THE SLAVE TREE by ALAN PETER RYAN
An altogether fascinating mix of travel writing and horror fiction by the late Alan Peter Ryan. Here, in a novel drafted in 1998 and published in 2013, Ryan relates the allegedly true account of a trip to Rio De Janeiro, and the discovery of a tree that sprouts pods containing human bodies.
TOPOR AND ME
The only film ever directed by the late actress/artist Sylvia Kristel was this eleven-minute animated short from 2004, which dramatizes her meeting with the infamous painter/author Roland Topor, and in so doing imparts an impressive amount of thematic heft.
