Here it is, my latest Look Back in Bedlam overview of the previous year’s happenings that are of particular interest to this site, as well as a listing of notable deaths. I’ll apologize in advance for all the political content, but the fact is that’s where we are right now. Hence…
Politics in Cinema: the 2018 Edition
Last year, writing about WONDER WOMAN, I bemoaned that “I hate it when a Hollywood blockbuster is politicized.” Silly me: in 2018 every movie was a political event, although the political furor generally concerned what the movies’ participants did off rather than onscreen.
An example would be the awards contender GREEN BOOK, whose Oscar chances are said to have been nixed after, among other things, its director Peter Farrelly was revealed to have repeatedly flashed his penis to various women back in the nineties. Similarly, BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY and BAFTA were hit with controversy after the film’s credited director Bryan Singer, who has a history of sex abuse allegations, was nominated for an award by that organization. Even the universally beloved (though not by me) A STAR IS BORN garnered some controversy due to the fact that among its credited producers was Jon Peters, who is (deservedly) among the #MeToo targets yet has a stake in the property (meaning he had to be included in the credits).
The takeaway? That political concerns about movies’ principals is the new (ab)normal—and that everyone involved in the making of any movie from now on had better be completely scandal-free.
The More Things Change…
The abovementioned political snafus, you may have noticed, all emanate from one distinct side of the political spectrum—and it ain’t the right. This is quite different from how things were in years past, when the right dominated all cultural discourse. I’m referring to the eighties and nineties, my formative years, when “family values” was the all-important buzzword, and concern about America’s “moral fiber” was at the forefront of seemingly all media discussion. Back then political action groups like the American Family Association and the Parents Television Council made sure American media towed the conservative line through letter writing campaigns and advertiser boycotts. The AFA and PTC are still active, but media executives are no longer scared of them. What they are scared—scared shitless, in fact—of are the liberal pundits on social media, particularly those associated with the #MeToo Movement.
What’s resulted is a new set of left-leaning fun police whose rallying cry, “freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequence,” is essentially a wordier variant on the popular conservative mantra “freedom isn’t free.” Popular songs were yanked from radio stations in decades past, just as they were in 2018 (that Satanic anthem “Baby its Cold Outside” in particular). Even some of the same pop-culture targets of the right wing are now in the crosshairs of the left, with Disney’s THE LITTLE MERMAID, once a popular conservative whipping boy due to a penis that was allegedly depicted on its VHS cover and a supposed erection in one scene, now being pilloried by the #MeToo crowd for its alleged racial stereotypes and a song that is apparently “misogynistic and dismissive of consent.”
I fully expect to see more such controversies in the coming months, as our moral fiber is further strengthened by partisan-based censorship.
Most Noteworthy Cinematic Trend
Female empowerment was a major theme of 2018’s movies, and as we all know, in Hollywood “empowerment” is synonymous with vengeance (as was stated in an exploitation movie poster tagline from the eighties, “Justice is another word for revenge”). To that end we got a ton of female revenge themed movies, including ACRIMONY, THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER’S WEB, PYEWACKET, UNSANE, THOROUGHBREDS, DESTROYER, WIDOWS, LIKE ME, WILDING, the new HALLOWEEN and the appropriately titled REVENGE. And there are quite a few more such films on tap for 2019 (the most promising of which IMO is the Gina Rodriguez headlined MISS BALA).
Make of this trend what you will. The sociopolitical underpinnings of these movies are pretty blatant, although it seems to me they’re just more examples of corporate America trying to appear woke (as in those already-notorious Gillette “Toxic Masculinity” ads, which have annoyed both sexists and feminists). I’m wondering why Hollywood doesn’t save itself the trouble and simply rerelease THRILLER: A CRUEL PICTURE or I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE.
Most Noteworthy Publishing Trend
There’s never been any shortage of celebrity bios, but they hit some kind of nadir in 2018. Among the more noteworthy were BRAVE by Rose McGowan (who publicly imploded while promoting it), the Robin Williams bio ROBIN by Dave Itzkoff and the Rock Hudson remembrance ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS by Mark Griffin, as well as NEVER GROW UP by Jackie Chan, REBEL by Nick Nolte, BLOWING THE BLOODY DOORS OFF by Michael Caine, I CAN’T MAKE THIS UP by Kevin Hart, ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE by Eric Idle and IN PIECES by Sally Field.
The latter was especially popular in the media for the dirt it contained on Burt Reynolds. Similarly, THIS WILL ONLY HURT A LITTLE by Busy Phillips was promoted heavily for its unsavory revelations about James Franco (something that upset Phillips, who complained “I’m a woman in this industry who wrote a very personal book…and the headlines were all about a man”). Furthering the trend was former Howard Stern staffer “Stuttering” John Melendez, who dished quite a bit on his old boss in EASY FOR YOU TO SAY, and Anthony Cumia of Opie and Anthony infamy, who told his side of the story in PERMANENTLY SUSPENDED.
As it happens, I actually read a number of these books, and can assert that at least a couple of them (ROBIN and REBEL) are worth your time.
Favorite Discoveries, Literary and Cinematic, of 2018
Jodorowskian bizarrie from Spain’s Gonzalo Suarez involving witchcraft, sentient dolls, astral projection and peerlessly ominous seaside locations.
BARRABAS
A heretofore unknown (to me) 1919 crime serial by the incomparable Louis Feuillade. Not great, but still a first-rate piece of old school entertainment.
BILLY THE MOST HORRIBLE BOY IN THE WORLD By MICHAEL DUGAN, BRETT COLQUHOUN
An Australian relic from 1980 that’s quite possibly the most wonderfully evil kids’ book you’ll ever read.
FOREIGN AFFAIRS By HUGH FLEETWOOD
A superlative psycho thriller by the talented, if shamefully underrated, Hugh Fleetwood.
JAILBIRDS
A French WIP-er, starring a never-better Sophie Marceau, that ranks with the finest prison films ever made.
JEANS BLUES: NO FUTURE
The Japanese “pinky” version of BONNIE AND CLYDE, with enough sex, gore and bad behavior to fill a dozen Hollywood thrillers.
KUSAH HAKWAAN
Apparently the first Alaskan film made entirely by Alaskans, a no-budget horror fest inspired by Northern folklore.
THE LITTLEST PIRATE KING By DAVID B., PIERRE MAC ORLAN
A stunning kid-oriented graphic novel from France that deals with some decidedly grown-up themes, namely the inevitability of death and its continuing effects on the living.
MALEVIL By ROBERT MERLE
One of the absolute best after-the-bomb novels in existence, and much better than the 1980s film adapted from it.
THE MAN WHO MISTOOK HIS WIFE FOR A HAT
An altogether fascinating British TVM consisting of an operatic adaptation of the Oliver Sacks case study “The Man who Mistook his Wife for A Hat” that’s set to music by Michael Nyman.
PURGATORY
A wrenching nineties war movie from the Russkies that deserves (but probably won’t get) a much wider audience than it heretofore received.
ROBOT
Lollywood lunacy—think ROBOCOP meets THE TERMINATOR meets I ROBOT, with added comedy and romance. A sequel, FYI, was released in ‘18.
THE ULIMITED DREAM COMPANY
Among eccentric J.G. Ballard documentaries (of which there exist quite a few) this 1983 entry is one of the oddest.
