Reviews & Commentary by Adam Groves
SEEDING OF A GHOST
If you can get past this film’s lousy opening minutes you’ll experience one of the wildest of all Hong Kong horror movies—and considering the unfettered nature of most such films, that’s no faint praise
THE SECT
This horror opus from Italy’s Michele Soavi is long winded, incoherent and overly derivative of the films of its producer and co-writer Dario Argento, but excels nonetheless in arrestingly grotesque, hallucinatory imagery
SECRETS OF A SOUL
From the silent era, a striking German-made depiction of psychoanalysis, notable for its unforgettably surreal dream/hallucination scenes
SEANCE
Kiyoshi Kurosawa is one of the most distinctive talents in the J-horror field. SÉANCE, a loose remake of the sixties classic SÉANCE ON A WET AFTERNOON, is not one of his better films, but it definitely has moments
SCREWED
One of the final films by Japan’s late, occasionally great Teruo Ishii, adapting a manga by the legendary Yoshiharu Tsuge
THE VAMPIRE’S CHRISTMAS
A confession: I’ve long since had my fill of vampires. That probably explains why this graphic novel, exploring the tortured existence of a vampire expat, didn’t do much for me
VAMPIRE JUNCTION
One of the key vampire tomes of the eighties, VAMPIRE JUNCTION was the premiere excursion in horror fiction by the famed science fiction scribe Somtow Sucharitkul, a.k.a. S.P. Somtow
VALHALLA
Newton Thornburg really knows how to write a novel, a fact he proved with 1976’s CUTTER AND BONE, and again in VALHALLA, possibly the most (undeservedly) obscure of all his books
VALERIE AND HER WEEK OF WONDERS (Book)
A real curiosity: a surrealist novel masquerading as a gothic thriller that never entirely satisfies as either. Rather, it’s a rare book that exists in its own indefinable category
VACATION
Fans of the late Philip K. Dick will appreciate this hallucinatory first novel, as will all those unafraid of challenging, thoughtful writing
