Reviews & Commentary by Adam Groves
THE SIGNAL
Hardly the “groundbreaking indie masterpiece” it’s been made out to be, THE SIGNAL (2007) is a semi-experimental anthology film that’s scary, funny and suspenseful—but still not all it could be
SHY PEOPLE
This largely forgotten gothic melodrama appears on its way to becoming a lost film. A shame, really, as it’s a haunting and atmospheric work unlike any other movie released during the eighties…or ever
THE SHOUT
Although it’s fallen into obscurity in recent years, this 1978 film marked something of a milestone in British horror with its unique narrative and unprecedented (for the time) use of sound
SHOOT
This would-be thriller wants very much to be a shocking expose of the dark underbelly of American machismo, and maybe it was back in 1976, but not today
SHOCKER
Wes Craven put some interesting ideas into play in this film, but it doesn’t really work. Blame a fraught shoot, and the fact that Craven was attempting in vain to create a NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET-like franchise
THE WILD WHITE WITCH
The idea of spicing the MANDINGO-inspired slavesploitation genre with supernatural eroticism definitely has promise, but this 1973 attempt is uninspiring and dull
THE WHITE LAMA
Here we have further proof that the Chilean writer/filmmaker Alexandro (or Alejandro) Jodorowsky is one of most magnificently brain-fried geniuses alive
WHILE THE DEVIL WAITS
The Jim Thompson-esque first person psycho genre gets a smart and troubling update in this gripping account that owes much to Thompson’s pulpy fiction, as well as the darker, more idiosyncratic crime novels of Charles Willeford
WHEN THE WIND BLOWS
This disturbing marvel of a graphic novel doesn’t often come up in discussions of the adult comic book renaissance of the 1980s, but it deserves a place of honor
WHAT FEARS BECOME
The third and (thus far) strongest anthology of stories, poetry and artwork culled from www.thehorrorzine.com
