Reviews & Commentary by Adam Groves
EATING RAOUL
This is the most famous movie directed by the late Paul Bartel, a highly successful indie black comedy about sex, murder and cannibalism
EATEN ALIVE
Director Tobe Hooper’s follow up to THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, EATEN ALIVE was one of the innumerable JAWS knock-offs that flooded Hollywood in the late 1970s, the shark stand-in here being a massive crocodile to which a loony old man feeds his enemies
SZAMANKA
SZAMANKA is frenzied, subversive and cinematically invigorating, at once a provocative art film and a lurid thriller
SYNGENOR
SYNGENOR begins with a topless babe getting attacked by the titular creature. Later a woman is genetically combined with the Syngenor to become a slimy two-headed what’s-it. Think what you will, but I’ll always have a soft spot for movies like this
SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE
This isn’t a revenge movie per se, but a dark, brutal exploration of fate and consequence from one of the world’s most interesting filmmakers. That filmmaker is Korea’s Chanwook Park, who’s created a deeply odd, and deeply personal, cinematic universe unique unto itself
SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS
Don’t get too excited about this book, as it’s not the proper novelization of the 1964 abomination SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS that I was hoping for
‘SALEM’S LOT
This wasn’t the first novel by Stephen King (it followed 1974’s CARRIE), but it was the book that really announced to the world what King was all about, and changed the horror genre forevermore
SAFE IN THE WOODS
That title is literal: this novel really does concern a safe located in the woods, specifically an underground enclosure in rural Arkansas that holds a massive amount of cash
AMERICAN PSYCHO (Book): Fifteen Years Later
If you were a reader back in 1991, as I was, then you probably recall, as I do, the furor that accompanied the publication of AMERICAN PSYCHO
SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE HOMOPHOBES
Here it is, the long-in-coming sequel to Robert Devereaux’s Yuletide classic SANTA STEPS OUT (1998)
