Reviews & Commentary by Adam Groves
CLOUDS
Filipino horror trash that was apparently marketed as a porno flick in its native land—a designation that isn’t entirely off the mark given the copious sex scenes and trashy overall vibe
MARS AND APRIL
Science fiction from Quebec that isn’t perfect (far from it!) but deserves points for effort
GRANDMOTHERS RECHARGE WELL!
This Czech satire owes more than a little something to Ray Bradbury’s I SING THE BODY ELECTRIC!/THE ELECTRIC GRANDMOTHER, but taken on its own terms it’s pretty good
THE JOURNEY INSIDE
An amalgamation of educational drama and grade-Z science fiction that was the first ever non-documentary film made expressly for IMAX
SCHOOL TIES
This 90s Hollyweird product is pretty good, albeit burdened with a crummy third act. These days it’s best known as an early showcase for quite a few future stars
FLOWERS OF HELL
An attempt at extreme erotica in which the erotic business is far outweighed by the extremity.
THE FIRES OF PELE
A graphic novel of sorts, THE FIRES OF PELE purports to be a lost journal kept by a young Mark Twain during his 1866 sojourn in Hawaii, a.k.a. the “Sandwich Islands,” where he confronted all manner of odd creatures
THE FIRE-SPIRITS
I say Wagner’s praise is a bit overdone, given that THE FIRE-SPIRITS, in its present form at least, is noticeably flawed.
FERAL
Killer kitties? That’s the subject of this novel, one of the first of the “nasties” that would come to define the 1970s horror fiction market.
FEATHER: TALES OF ISOLATION AND DESCENT
FEATHER is a true oddity that exists somewhere in the arena of J.G. Ballard and Ian Sinclair, yet will never be mistaken for anything other than itself.
