1998 was the year of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, a war movie that allegedly broke new ground in its depiction of the ugliness of combat. Few seem to know about the ’98 Russian movie PURGATORY, which far outdid Spielberg’s film in grit, gore and sheer unpleasantness

Here’s a neglected science fiction themed indie that deserves a reappraisal

One of those no-budget wonders that demands the viewer be VERY forgiving, yet offers a number of real rewards for those willing to put up with its shoddy production values

As a veritable epic of sustained surreality this graphic novel is fairly remarkable.
FRIGHT NIGHT
Skipp & Spector (who as of the early 1990s have gone their separate ways) were always at their best in unflinching and intense prose, which you won’t find here.
Freezer Burn
A wildly profane and plain crazy concoction that reads like a deranged collaboration between Flannery O’Connor and Jim Thompson.
FREAKS AND FANTASIES
As for FREAKS AND FANTASIES, it’s the first Robbins publication in over sixty years, and for that reason alone deserves a look.
FREAKS’ AMOUR
A classic of freak lit that predated the better-known GEEK LOVE by nearly a full decade. FREAKS’ AMOUR would appear to have been an influence on the latter novel in its notably perceptive depiction of the day-to-day lives of some severely deformed individuals.
