Welcome to the latest edition of my Look Back in Bedlam overview of the previous year’s noteworthy happenings in the world of Bedlam Files-friendly media, along with a listing of book and film recommendations and noteworthy deaths. I’ll start with a topic that topped the news in 2019, specifically…

The State of the (Social) Media

I’m constantly being told that I need to embrace the wonderful world of social media, which is now all-but ubiquitous. But how good a thing is it?

Hollywood now uses Twitter and Facebook as, essentially, free publicity arms. That explains why we’re getting movies like CHARLIE’S ANGELS and CATS, both of which reportedly provoked a great deal of pre-release anticipation among Twitter/Facebook users. I don’t think I need to remind you of how those movies ultimately panned out.

We also have social media to thank for un-newsworthy news, a trend that undoubtedly reached some kind of apex in 2019. Due to algorithms calculated on the preferences of social media users—who tend to obsesses over celebrities the way people of past eras chronicled the doings of gods and goddesses—we now have mixed into legitimate news feeds headlines like “Harry Styles Apparently Just Followed Ariana Grande on Instagram,” “Irina Shayk Sat In The Middle Of Lady Gaga And Bradley Cooper At The Oscars,” “Khloé Kardashian Unfollows Jordyn Woods on Instagram” and “Kim Kardashian Left A Little Dejected After a Versace Dress Doesn’t Fit Her.” All vitally important stories I’m sure, but do we really need them alongside news about North Korea and Iran?

On a related note…

The Marvel Question

The big movie-related controversy of 2019 involved Martin Scorsese and the worth of Marvel movies. Scorsese claimed in an interview that Marvel’s films were “not cinema,” words that in a sane world would have been recognized as an individual opinion with which we could either agree or disagree—but in this world, of course, there was a mass freak-out.

What Scorsese should have said was that, simply, he prefers DC to Marvel. I doubt this would have lessened the furor that greeted his remarks, but it would have been a more measured way to express his feelings—and an accurate one, given that Scorsese was at one time set to direct JOKER, a DC property.

What’s more, he’d have been correct. DC has always been the more innovative, risk-taking outfit, having published ground-breaking comic book sagas like THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS and WATCHMEN back in the eighties, and been the first of the two companies to greenlight a woman-led superhero movie (with WONDER WOMAN, which beat Marvel’s CAPTAIN MARVEL to the punch by two years). Certainly Marvel has the edge in terms of financial success, but I say DC has had the more rewarding and enduring run.

The Reboot Question

It’s been said that Hollywood will stop turning out cookie cutter movie reboots when we stop watching ‘em. Well, it seems that day might just be at hand.

Many folks (this one included) have been warning that audiences—even the foreign audiences currently being chased by Hollywood—will grow bored with all the regurgitation, and 2019 would appear to have at least partially proved us right. There were admittedly a few successful reboots in ‘19, such as ALADDIN, THE LION KING and LITTLE WOMEN, but for the most part the news relating to such fare was pretty bleak, with NANCY DREW AND THE HIDDEN STAIRCASE, HELLBOY, DUMBO, MEN IN BLACK: INTERNATIONAL, JACOB’S LADDER, TERMINATOR: DARK FATE and CHARLIE’S ANGELS all disappointing—and in several cases flopping outright.

It seems that even in China, Hollywood’s new favorite market, reboots aren’t as welcome as they once were. See this article, which contains the following quote from a Chinese website: “Local films are catching up to Hollywood on many indicators like IP, story, special effects and genre, while Hollywood films are caught in a bottleneck period of self-repetition and a lack of originality.” I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Most Welcome Blast from the Past

That would be Quentin Tarantino, a near-thirty year veteran who in 2019 turned up with ONCE UPON A TIME…IN HOLLYWOOD. Tarantino isn’t nearly as well-liked as he once was—as a New York Post headline assured us, “Quentin Tarantino’s exploitation has no place in Hollywood anymore”—yet he deserves kudos for providing an increasingly risk-averse industry with a much needed shaking-up.

ONCE UPON A TIME… is very likely the most sensitive and least aberrant of Tarantino’s films, yet it still made plenty of waves due to its nearly all-white cast (which was accurate to the film’s late 1960s Hollywood setting), the violence against women contained in its climax (the real-life inspiration for which was far more violent than anything dreamed up by Tarantino) and its less-than-flattering depiction of Bruce Lee. The latter point was particularly contentious, with numerous commentators jumping to Lee’s defense, describing a man who apparently outdid Gandhi, Mother Theresa and Jesus Christ in saintly virtue. As the saying goes, when the legend becomes fact, print the legend; Tarantino, it seems, chose to print the facts.

Yet for all the naysaying ONCE UPON A TIME…IN HOLLYWOOD actually made a fair amount of money. I guess maybe there is room for Tarantino’s exploitation after all, along with that of old farts like Martin Scorsese, Gaspar Noe, Michael Bay and Todd Phillips, who further shook things up with THE IRISHMAN, CLIMAX, SIX UNDERGROUND and JOKER. You know we’re living in interesting times when the old are shocking the young rather than the other way around.

Most Interesting “New” Publisher

News about the publishing scene was pretty scant in 2019 (outside the obvious: it’s in bad shape), but there was Eibon Press. An indie publisher jointly run by Rotten Cotton’s Shawn Lewis and author-illustrator Stephen Romano, Eibon has actually been around for a while, but really got going in 2019.

It specializes in Romero-scripted limited edition comic books oriented toward the type of grindhouse-era exploitation with which I and so many others grew up. Unapologetically rude, raw and politically incorrect, these comics include the must-own three issue “HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP meets BAD LIEUTENANT” saga BOTTOMFEEDER, which fleshes out an unfilmed Romano screenplay with characters drawn in the guises of exploitation movie legends like Joe Spinell, Zoe Tamerlis, Clu Gulager and Joe Pilato (who was supposed to star in the never-made BOTTOMFEEDER film). Also offered by Eibon are adaptations of several Lucio Fulci flicks (including new editions of THE BEYOND and ZOMBIE, both initially published by the late Blackest Heart Media), as well as the Charles Band exploiter LASERBLAST and the Spinell headlined anti-classic MANIAC.

You can only get these comics direct from the publisher, and for prices that are a bit higher than what most comic book mavens are used to (I can actually remember the days when comics went for a couple bucks). Alas, in an increasingly unfriendly publishing world it seems the collector’s market, which necessitates inflated pricing, is the only way for outfits like Eibon to survive. Here’s hoping they continue to do so!

Favorite Discoveries, Literary and Cinematic

A TOPIARY By SHANE CARRUTH

This unfilmed science fiction screenplay from the creator of UPSTREAM COLOR is simply one of the most astounding things I’ve ever read (and I can assure you that I’ve read some pretty astounding things in my time).

ALAMUT By VLADIMIR BARTOL

A novel, translated from the Slovene, about Iran’s fabled “Old Man of the Mountain” Hassan-i-Sabbah, who created the “Hashashin” sect—an elusive figure that author Vladimir Bartol more than does justice.

DIONYSUS: THE ULTIMATE EXPERIMENT By WILLIAM S. RUBEN

A definite eye-opener that explores the vagaries of sex in zero-g. Need I say more?

DRAG

A nifty zombie themed short from the nineties. Yes, I know I should have known about this one long before 2019, but for some reason DRAG flew under my radar—a fact, thankfully, that has been remedied at last.

IL SEGNO DEL COMANDO

A little-known-in-the-English-speaking-world Italian TV miniseries that nearly fifty years after its initial inception stands as a triumph of atmospheric apprehension and storytelling ingenuity.

LA MALEDICTION (ROC, OU LE MALEDICTION)

Easily one of the top French horror films of the 1970s, a superbly eerie and evocative account of supernatural doings in a rural locale, based on a novel by the late Gallic horrormeister Claude Seignolle.

THE PREMISES OF OTTO GAST By COLIN RAFF

This novella may have been published back in the nineties, but it represents the state of the art in neo-decadent, surreal horror.

‘TIS PITY SHE’S A WHORE

Future KILLING FIELDS director Roland Joffe made this adaptation of John Ford’s Jacobean classic for the BBC, and it’s a stunner: tough-minded, staunchly naturalistic and superbly acted.

THE TOWN THAT TOOK A TRIP By DEANE LOUIS ROMANO

To my mind there’s no possible way this book could not be fun: a late sixties relic about LSD poured into the water supply of a desert town at the start of an especially sweltering day, resulting in some profound lunacy.

THE TRAGEDY CAME FROM VIETNAM

Fact-based Taiwanese exploitation about Vietnamese refugees resorting to urine drinking and cannibalism on a deserted island. Light-hearted it isn’t, but for what it is this pic is pretty strong.

VirgintoothVIRGINTOOTH By MARK IVANHOE

There’s never been a vampire novel like this one, featuring vamps that can shapeshift, shrink themselves to microscopic size, possess bodies and alter the very fabric of reality. You really have to admire a book that thinks this big.

YOUNG WITCHES: LONDON BABYLON By FRANCISCO SOLANO, BARRIERO

A graphic novel whose conception was admittedly somewhat unpromising, yet due to its creators’ irrepressible imaginations emerges as a spectacle of X-rated dementia worthy of the Marquis de Sade.
